Entangled in Laughter: A Review of Laid (2024)
Laid is based on a woman and her sex life being more troublesome than ever as men drop dead for her love. It manages to tell the story in a rather amusing and enigmatic manner which perfectly suits the show. While the premise may not be the most usual – it was executed with proper humor and emotion making it quite an enjoyable watch. The feel constant, laughing to deal with serious issues can be funny while maintaining a strong emotional base at its core is successfully achieved.
Both Stephanie Hsu and Zosia Mamet are supported by an outstanding cast that manages to be funny yet intensely emotional. The feelings that Kevin and Scott share created the emotion and comedy of the show along with Michael Angarano and Tommy Martinez. Their purpose is to keep the series fresh and well-focused.
The music also complements the series’ comic and dramatic elements without being obtrusive. It aligns perfectly with the story, which is beneficial to the mood.
The cinematography is active, matching the overall tone of the show that is eccentric and playful. It adds and fits amazingly well into the comedic and emotional elements of the show.
The environments subdue the comedic aspect of the series and couple it up with the specific strategic separate prop placement. Resulting visuals appear to be quite worked and the enhance the general tone of show.The use of special effects is kept to a minimum but adds to the comedy and mystery of the show, without overpowering the show or its narrative structure.Animation and editing must be strong in showing to make sure the jokes and the story are presented to the best of the ability.
