  • 28

Miss Austen, focuses on the two women who were Jane Austen and her sister Cassandra. It is just a historical TV series that can knot romance, familial bond, and societal pressure into a total and interesting story. The relationship between the Austen sisters is key to the plot, revealing both great intimacy and the obstacles of their lives set in a male world.

The series offers a view of sisterhood, love and the limitations of women faced in the Regency era. This tone is also a touch of gentle humour and heartfelt drama, capturing the way in which familial lovelies and the Austen sisters are draped in the oftentimes equally emotional real world restrictions. By using its period setting so effectively, the show reflects modern feelings about gender roles and personal law.

Keeley Hawes is nothing short of brilliant as the archetypal Jane Austen, her performance of the tempered intellect and sensitivity of its namesake. The leading roles are played by Alfred Enoch and Patsy Ferran, who provide good support to the narrative with their robust performances. Aisling Walshs direction almost summons the lush visuals and emotive storytelling from the screen to the picture.

Chemistry between Hawes and Jessica Hynes who play Cassandra is palpable, and plays as believable and touching. She is good at rendering the essence of each scene in a way that keeps the audience involved and never looses the emotional rollercoaster which are the lives of Jane and Cassandra Austen.|The musical score compliments the series and plays to the emotional depth without overpowering the dialogue or scene. Classic compositions are effectively employed to enhance the narrative and evoke the time period, as well as the characters’ inner worlds, thus the cinematography of Miss Austen is a visual feast, with perfectly composed shots that evoke the elegance of the Regency period.

It uses period- appropriate set and lighting just like the world of Jane Austen to immerse the viewers into the world the way it is portrayed.

From the intricate period costumes, lavish sets, to the way the shots are lit, the production design makes the viewer feel like they are in the early 19th century. Miss Austen allows the viewer to immerse in the road map to its story without the distraction of the special effects to anything beyond its own efficacy and authenticity to historical accuracy.

The special effects of Miss Austen are sparse and effectively incorporated into its storytelling without detracting from the eyes-on historical authentic sequence of its story. The editing isn’t too noticeable but it does a very good job of enhancing the atmosphere of certain scenes – making everything a bit magical without drowning everyone in melodrama.

The story arcs never feel disjointed either because the editing is seamless and the story flows from scene to scene with ease. Miss Austen maintains that rhythm, keeping the audience involved as much as it can, balanced with scenes of tension and drama, as the narrative unfolds, and as the characters grow more and more complicated, but at a good pace that allows you to develop the characters, and you see how they fit in with the plot. Neither is too much in a rush with the storytelling, nor spends too long, keeping the eyes engaged as it moves.

The dialogue is sharp and reflective of Jane Austens own wit and observational prowess. Miss Austen does a great job of capturing the essence of Regency era while presenting fancy for a modern crowd and is light an enlightening.
