Together - Movie Review

Or having just moved to a rustic countryside with his new wife, they then cause a supernatural phenomenon which transforms their relationship, and their literally being for good. There is plenty of time in this movie for audiences to wonder what is real and what is not before it’s too late, this movie creates a beautifully paced narrative that starts off eerie and just grows more eerie with each layer until the very last one.

Psychological horror is a strong theme throughout this movie, also incorporating themes of body horror which questions what it means to be human, theyre so intricate in the way that theyre tackled its mind blowing.

Its tone is unrelentingly haunting, intermingling mundane reality with aggressive supernatural elements, and Alison Brie and Dave Franco are a real stand out in their respective performances. Their chemistry is tangible and real, so it resonates on screen. The spiraling tension is greatly helped by supporting characters portrayed by Damon Herriman and others.

Michael Shanks does an excellent job of simultaneously mixing the horror with suspense and the sci-fi elements. His ability to create a coherent, complex narrative arc says a lot about his directorial prowess.

The films score is precisely the right compliment to the dreadful themes of the film, with its creepy melodies and ill designed sound, impressively infiltrating the suspense, solidifying its marks on one’s mind after the the last credit roll.

Cinematographer gives the film a flair and striking visuals, which fit the picturesque, haunted background where the film takes place. The film gets very chilling due to bone chilling framing and bone chilling camera work.

The production design takes place in a strange yet creepy beautiful world that’s very much a part of the narrative. The attention to detail in the making of the film and the body horror depiction in particular works as visceral and hauntingly real(practical effects). The use of subtle CGI serves to enhance rather than overshadow these elements.

Pacing is meticulously orchestrated through astute editing choices, creating a rhythmic ebb and flow that mirrors the characters psychological unraveling and maintaining audience engagement throughout.

The film maintains a deliberate pace, slow yet suspenseful, allowing the horror to unfold gradually, making each revelation more impactful.

The script is tightly written, with dialogue that is concise yet meaningful, allowing actors to convey emotion and subtext effectively. While, like it’s slower paced scores, Together does a good job of making atmospheric horror, then slow pacing may put a sour taste in the mouth of those who fare better with the quick-paced kind of horror. Though abstract elements of the 2 piece may be a challenge or may seem as piece that is just too much for some to grasp, Watching Together is like stepping into a nightmare, beautifully shot, deeply unsettling, and just thought provoking.

The psychological and bodily horror piece, it is a lingering film that causes introspection and discomfort.
