A Unique Blend of Romance, Horror, and Humor
In Your Monster, we are singly introduced to the soft spoken actress, Laura Franco, whose world as blown apart, and comes an unlikely new companion, a charming monster from her closet. Laura the film is about a tale of humor, romance and coming of age as Laura goes through isolation, struggles in life, but ultimately finds beauty in embracing one’s inner chaos.
The other side of things with Laura the film are a handle on themes of love, isolation, self discovery, inner conflict and so forth. It weaves the romantic comedy subgenre with horror and then finds a way to make the light-heartedness naive while delivering darker tones. The story of Laura unearthing strength in her vulnerabilities is a unique empowerment narrative for viewers, and Melissa Barrera fantastically brings forth the intricacies of a woman at a juncture of life. The relationship she’s got going with the Monster, Tommy Dewey playing the part of said Monster, is wonderful in its fantasy and grounded in (emotional) reality. The supporting cast adds interesting subplots and memorable moments to the movie. The movie is managed beautifully by Caroline Lindy in the tightrope between comedy, romance and horror. The soundtrack for the film mirrors the film’s whimsical and eerie mood. Lindy also crafts a different narrative voice that changes between humorous and melancholic scenes creating interest in the film’s runtime. Musical cues perfect in timing are applied to draw us ever deeper into Lauras life and world, full of romantic whimsy and a touch of the admittedly creepy.
Light and shadow in the cinematographers hand accentuate the films eerie but very intimate mood. Not only does every setting visually engage the audience, throwing them into the claustrophobic closet of Laura, or the colorful yet foreboding cityscape of the parking lot, but the production design takes average spaces and makes them whimsical and sometimes frightfully eerie.
The contrast between Laura’s mundane apartment and the surreal elements brought by the Monster adds depth to the visual storytelling.
Special effects in Your Monster are efficiently used, helping to bring the Monster character to life in a way thats believable yet maintains a quirky charm, enhancing the films fantastical elements without overpowering its narrative style.
The editing helps maintain the films pacing, ensuring a smooth flow between its comical, romantic, and horrific moments. The narrative structure is supported by precise cuts and transitions which also help build the tension and then release it meaningfully.
The pacing is good, it moves viewers from a high to a low and then back up again without partying on any slow part. This implies that each scene is deliberate in propelling the storyline towards cohesiveness and meld.
The navels of ‘Your Monster are both funny and touching and the narrative reflects the characters trudge and the movies theme permeating. Particularly poignant are the exchanges between Laura and the Monster and most of all for their particular bond.
Your Monster further blends genres, but some viewers may be too jarred by tonal shifts. While the juxtaposition of horror and romantic comedy is unique, not all will embrace such a strange amalgamation. Sometimes your Monster feels disjointed given its innovative approach, however it curves enough for a refreshing take on romantic comedies, by adding elements of horror and fantasy. I found its exploration of self discovery and acceptance to resonate and this film is a thought provoking one to watch enticing while it provokes.
