The Incredible Hulk - Movie Review

The Incredible Hulk: A Riveting MCU Origin Tale

  • 5

Incredible Hulk is the narrative of Dr. Bruce Banner, a scientist who is in a hunt for a method to stop him from changing into the giant green monster whenever he gets out of impulse. He searches for some relief and remedy as Bruce struggles against the military’s desire to weaponize his condition. However, the coming of the Abomination, a creation from similar experiments, puts the Hulk in turmoil to a heated battle.

The themes of the movie revolve around transformations, one’s evil self, and the effects of powerful military technology. Adrenaline and melancholy blend in the film as the tempo is intense yet calm alternated with moments of tension and concern, giving the story contemplative and invigorating mood. In the thick of things direct and dangerous alike, Betty Ross is portrayed by Liv Tyler which gives a hue of hope and stability. In the course of the film, Tim Roth, portraying Emil Blonsky, physically transforms marvelously well into the Abomination, an effective and dangerous villain. William Hurt stands out in his portrayal of General Ross in the story of ambition and chase. His work is slow and steady which lets the story unfold while also being fast-paced for a superhero movie.

The music composed by Craig Armstrong is quite introspective and also quite fast as needed for a superhero movie that is fully focused on Bruce as a hero and the huge battles. The sound track is relevant to the context whereby important moments are backed up by melodious tunes which increases the effect of the transformations that portray Bruce.

Peter Menzies Jr. makes the use of contrasting colors between Bruce’s hiding place as well as the violent green reality of Hulk. While detailing the action sequences, the camera doesn’t forget to focus on performances at the right time.

From secret laboratories to a city, the film’s settings establish their own narratives. Every scene represents some part of Bruce’s struggle and shows his path to the search of redemption, although he is presented as lonely all the time.

Using the cinematic rules, the transformations of Hulk and the figure of the Abomination are mostly functional but spectacular at the same time. Here, compounds constitute the silhouette of the action scenes, although computer-generated impressions look somewhat old-fashioned. Stylistically, some scene changes are awkward, which may briefly interrupt the movement in the action film. It is a slow-burning film that escalates tactfully while approaching the climax of the picture. Some are clichéd but do not hurt the story.

Despite the assets of the movie, the film works somewhere between its hype and the failure of delivering it. Sometimes the emotional threads feel less pronounced compared to the flashy action scenes. However, certain CGI stands out when observed by today’s standards, though it is a small drawback when it comes to the movies emotive qualities. Fury and wisdom of Banner are shown by Norton; however contemplation and aggression are shown by Norton in a good balance. The movie is, perhaps, not without flaws but in terms of the pacing as well as CGI the movie could have been better, however, it offers a good look into the origin of the famed superhero.
