Top Gun: Maverick - A Soaring Success
In Top Gun: Maverick, Pete Maverick Mitchell portrayed by Tom Cruise is now a pilot engineer whose work is to train young naval aviators. When he is reintroduced into the elite Top Gun school, he faces his greatest demons especially when training his best friend’s son, Rooster. This daddy of all sequels manages to crescendo to a perilous mission which is a true test to the graduates as never before.
The movie ingeniously boils themes of succession, apprenticeship, giving up one’s own life for others, and the quintessence of adventure. To this good mix of serious undertones, there is the added feature of airborne combat and the near thrill of doing it in a small airplane. It is an echo of the past which feels quintessentially traditional without leaning too much on the remembrance of the earlier film.
Tom Cruise dominates the personality of Maverick and brings the memorable qualities of the original film to life with charisma and more depth. Miles Teller also makes a good job as now a new representative of Goose, combining the filming ambitions and the heavy emotions. Jennifer Connelly and Val Kilmer do a great job in supporting errands and help to create more depth to Maverick’s universe.
There is also new blood in the ship’s captain: Joseph Kosinski, who gave a new pulse to the film and brought interesting ideas to the table. He has done a really good job on landing complex aerial movements and keeping true to the human circumstance. He acknowledges the plot of the first movie but also tries to explore different territories in filmmaking.
Musical and sound parts of the film increase its emotional powerful scenes, which may be felt as exact continuation of the represented novel. Intense pumping tracks mix with quiet melancholic tunes to reflect the movie’s swing between the active and passive scenes.
