Chhaava is an appealing period film directed by Laxman Utekar that recites the life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and his life through the kingdom between the seventeenth century Maratha Empire. It brings out his struggle, achievements and contributions giving an epic action packed touch regarding family and political relationships of the 17th century Maratha empire. The elements of action and drama are interwoven perfectly for the viewers to be educated as well as entertained while having a feel of pride in the culture.

A perfect cover to body paint by Vicky Kaushal portraying Sambhaji Maharaj through his stellar acting skills. Envisioned by Akshaye Khanna, Rashmika Mandanna, andothers in leading roles, the supporting roles also give a realistic spirit and powerful biography of the historical figures. The viewers can feel the great powerful emotions of the heroes in intensely acted scenes.

Laxman Utekar once again has built up a monumental epic story with action-packed scenes and thoughtful moments of drama. His directorial style always incorporates historical aspects, and the narrative style makes it easy to tell characters’ stories in big historical settings.

Speaking of Chhaava finally, the music of this movie has Indian traditional instruments used during the emotional and historic scenes. It helps in immersing the audience into the period, from the wide historical events to the character transformations.

Ae all the big canvassed battles of the Maratha Empire, along with the montages of beautiful vastness of the locations and the emotion of a closed-knit family. The use of nonverbally garnishing the story visually contributes toward building the immense epic dimension of the movie.More emphasis on early 17th century fashion in costumes, interior decoration and artifacts beautifully placed to give the film credibility. Palaces and battlefields are magnificently depicted that depict the great history of Maratha Empire.

Use of special effects is magnificent when it comes to war scenes but not overpowering or dominating the substance of the movie. The two most notable features of the film are the realistic battle scenes as well as crisps editing preventing the movie from falling into the historical drama troupe. The well-coordinated shot and scene placement contribute to the movie’s overall plot, keeping the viewers hooked to the movie. Using close to three hours for the length of the film does not bore the audience as it carefully timing the flow of the movie.

Another strength that can be seen in the dialogue of the film is that what is said in Chhaava is reflective of the articulated language that the period has and the socio-political intricacies. Chhaava is, however, less effective when it comes to providing details about the historical period that is being depicted in the dance Without being annoying, it pushes the narrative forward smoothly, and even offers some historical notes. However, the carefully thought-out picture detailing is beneficial for the fans of historical dramas, while casual viewers may find it difficult to follow the show’s multi-layered plots. Not only does it educate but also entertains while also being able to provide an insight regarding history all thanks to the stellar performances and great direction. Of special interest for those who consider themselves as lovers of great drama and deep examination of the cultural heritage.
