Gripped by the Fog: 'The Rig' Review
Taking place on a Scottish oil platform, Kinloch Bravo, ‘The Rig’ ghosts a mystery as a fog cuts off the workers from the underground for three days. When the communication breakdowns occur, the supernatural events happen and it turns into the thrilling survival journey full of trust issues and unknown.
Isolation, trust, unknown – these ideas are in the focus of the series and the show has rather mysterious tone. The supernatural aspect enhances mystery and thrills, giving the show dramatic, sci-fi and thriller appeal while oil rig environment underscores entrapment or fear.
The cast is superb including the leading lady, Emily Hampshire tackles vulnerability with strength in the middle of disaster. Iain Glen and the other members of the cast provide real and complex performances and make the viewers feel the tense atmosphere of the show.
Directors John Strickland and Alex Holmes maintain suspense and tension through their work and create a series that combines the supernatural and human drama and keep the audiences interested and worried.
The musical score adds to the mysterious and tense mood of the series and complements the drama that takes place in the immersed oil rig The utilization of angles and lighting helps in the effect of an eerie presence as well as the suspense of something lurking in the fog.
