Star Trek: Deep Space Nine - TV Series Review

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine begins in the 24th century as space station Deep Space Nine opens a stable wormhole and Commander Sisko, as its sailor-in-chief, navigates the Federated space station through zeropolical dense space. After the Cardassian occupation of Bajor and the connection of the wormhole to the Dominion, which is led by shapeshifting Founders, the station becomes a nexus of diplomacy and conflict between deep space powers. An epic space opera that wields political intrigue, warfare and spiritual exploration into one tall tale, with central themes being honor, power, spirituality and transformation. A tendency in the narrative is to juxtapose the complexities of diplomacy with the stark realities of war. With a darker and more sophisticated tone than any of its predecessors, DS9 does a nuanced dissection of ethics, identity, and leadership, amongst other matters of import. Wormholes and shapeshifters who are, well, powerful served as metaphors for the change that was very possible, Avery Brooks heads a heroic cast that includes Terry Farrell and Rene Auberjonois who deliver nuanced performances that bring the gravitas of the series. Brooks infuses the idealism and emotional depth needed for a character who wears two hats as a Starfleet officer and a spiritual emissary. The series is also filled with supporting characters like Odo and Quark and the dynamic creative visions of David Livingston, Les Landau, Winrich Kolbe give to the series.

DS9’s serialized story approach features the episodic content balanced with the overarching narrative across seasons, each director’s contribution adding to this. While the directors never lose the tone, they effectively evoke the political and moral complexity of the ethos, and the musical score is crafted by Dennis McCarthy who created a score that complements the series: it is of the grandeur of space opera with the personal struggles of the characters. The cinematography shoots epic shots of space station against the stars, intimate close ups of the drama heavy moments, and adds such richness to that unfolding drama in DS9s storytelling. McCarthys compositions inject pivotal moments with emotional layers.

DS9 focuses on this sharp contrast between the small, intimate stories of humans in the station, and the broad, infinite universe out beyond the station.

DS9 is known for its amazing attention to detail in its space station production design, a station caught between the contested status of increased use by Cardassian architecture and modified by Starfleet. The sets are functional and symbolic at the same time, talking to the joining of dissimilar cultures and ideologies.|DS9 is smart to pull off cutting edge effects for its time. The visual presentation of the wormhole and the different spacecrafts are magnificently displayed, immersing the player into its story. One notable thing about this effects team is their ability to seamlessly integrate practical and CGI elements, and this edit is adept at keeping narrative flow and pacing important in this series with multiple plotlines and character arcs. This is an example of an episode edited to the highest of standards, seamlessly integrating major story arcs such as the Dominion War, and standalone episodes at once.

They also manage to keep the pacing dynamic by not only producing episodic stories but also serialized arcs simultaneously. Some story arcs have slower building of tension, while others drop the action and drama as soon as they start. Its pacing also allows for a balance between the buzz of the director and the narrative complexity it depends on while keeping the viewer awake from season to season.

The dialogue is its infinitely cerebral tone, and meanwhile, though it would be easy to caricature the conceit therein, the show never sinks that low. Characters debate philosophy, politics, and the truths of themselves, and provide more development of characters and the themes. Its ambition, intricate storytelling, and the wealth of political and philosophical content it carries sometimes overwhelm DS9 as its every line is crafted to make sure that it remains authentic and intriguing. Although some arcs might feel stretched if time is at a premium, this shouldn’t greatly affect engagement. Such a transition also means leaving behind Star Trek exploration-centric traditions, which could divide traditionalists fans.
