Shining Vale, in turn, tells the narrative about the writer Pat Phelps and her family, who had to move to a small town to a house with spirits. Pat has some form of depression plus the events occurring in the house making it difficult to tell whether she has been possessed or not. Such moments are when Pat tries to protect her family members from a ghost despite the fact that she is only a thin layer of a human veneer. The mood of the show can be often described as funny and scary at the same time because the show’s creators do everything to make the audience feel both comic and uncomfortable.

Courteney Cox gives the performance of a lifetime as Pat and seems to be genuinely terrified and at the same time very funny when needed. Appending the aspect of subtlety, Greg Kinnear acts as a husband attempting to steady his collapsing family. Each of the members performs well as a collective cast.

The directors of the show include Liz Friedlander, Catriona McKenzie, and Alethea Jones and they have a perfect blend of comedy, horror, suspense thereby making each episode to have a suspense on the horror side and light humor on the other side.

The music that is used in Shining Vale is appropriate for the show as it creates a backdrop of suspense as well as light The lighting and the contrast of light and blackness are quite impressive and only add to the horror experience in a really good way.

The set design is excellent and depicts a haunted house with the history that the series has. Specific stetting enhances the story and create a realistic environment around it.

Both, the special effects are used moderately; however, where they are used they make the show more tense. They use restraint when it comes to pointing them out in order to firmly establish them.

The timing in Shining Vale is quite good; viewers do not get bored, but at the same time, there is enough time for developing characters and creating suspense when operating between two genres. This helps viewers stay focused without any boring moments lingering for too long.

Humor is often used in dialogs, and, combined with a darker setting, it adds another layer of depth to Shining Vale, making it very entertaining to watch.

As for the strengths, deep genres and themes are well-balanced in Shining Vale , however, there can be some gaps in the plot and predictability, which may interfere with the experience. Still these are minor problems when compared to the whole picture.

Shining Vale is an entertaining journey through a romantic’s crises and paranormal comedy. If you haven’t seen ‘What We Do in the Shadows,’ its cast, the show’s genre belonging to comedy-horror, and the representation of the haunted house’s symbolism referring to personal and mental issues bring something new to the show.
