’Sex and the City’ takes a look at the love, life, and social relationship of Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte, and Miranda, four friends living in New York City in the 1990s. The focus of the series is laid down within their various adventures and difficulties, falling in love and living through discussions of the two protagonists.

The show portrays themes of friendship, love and the journey towards discovering oneself in the concrete milieu of New York. The show has changed its register from zany sitcom to serious drama while presenting a realistic portrait of contemporary femininity. Sex and the City manages to weave comedy in with conversation about sex, love, and identity.

This is due to the great cast with Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristen Davis, and Cynthia Nixon. The actors animate these famous figures. All the actresses are believable as personalities – from Carrie, who is too focused on herself, to Samantha, who is a real fighter – the performances are powerful and memorable.

The cast, the inspired direction by Michael Patrick King and others recreate New York City while paying equal attention to the characters’ individual narratives. Every episode is designed to focus on personal development to show growth of the characters but in the same episodes, the friends are presented in a continuous and stable situation. Well planned it showcases continuous entertainment throughout the episode.

The music playlist has the right number of groovy tracks and suspense filled background music to portray the dynamics of the series. The music accompanies important scenes in the script and adds an energetic, sometimes sappy soundtrack to the film literally, bringing the script meetings to life through dynamic cityscapes. The photography of the movie contrasts the personal worlds of the two characters with external settings, and it is perfectly done to reveal moments of the main characters’ lives, from the rich parties to their tête-à-têtes. They bring out a picture that is as good as the screenplay.

Rather than object, the set design is top notch in portraying the richness as well as the variety of New York. These could range from stylish apartment buildings to magnificent eateries, thus creating color and feeling that relates to the sophistication of the series’ theme and feel.

On this, while spectacular, is scarce, the series includes a couple of instances of flow from scene to scene with the use of special effects. Sanga uses effects sparingly to augment the story but does not let them detract from the identification with the characters and their spoken lines.

The editing is intelligent and mostly unobtrusive, apart from maintaining the progressively heightened tension essential for engaging viewers with the three main storylines. What makes the series most remarkable is cutting and transitions between scenes which allow for regular and build up of Comedy and Drama: The duration of the program is 30 minutes, making it very suitable. The series is fluid, introducing various topics in the society and giving characters substantial growth and noteworthy narratives.

The beauty of the show lies in the talks—they are natural, funny, and full of meaningful words. True to life dialogues with the ability to mine emotional resonance and laughter. The script is filled with quotations which are still popular with the audience due to the combination of humor and pathos.

Still, ‘Sex and the City’ is not without sins – sometimes it uses stereotypes, and the representation of diversity is quite limited. Some narrations may make the audience feel like they are in the dark ages regarding some social aspects. However, for its time, the series poses the viewer a number of groundbreaking idea.

When watching ‘Sex and the City,’ one is in for an emotional ride that will leave the viewers feeling deeply connected to it; especially if one is a fan of stories of empowered women and their friendships.
