The Sex Lives of College Girls: An Honest Exploration of Female Friendships and Freedom

  • 33

The Sex Lives of College Girls is centered on a liberal arts college called Essex College in New England and revolves around four college freshmen, a cocktail of hormones and contradictions. The cast of young women handling their new lives with wit and tenderness brings about an adorable portrayal of college life in the present, which is appealing.

A situational comedy format complemented with and a serious tone as the girls discover who they are and how they want to live, creates a good outlook on life in college. The mood is both fun and self-searching, capturing college life as exciting, messy, and…cringe.

The cast – the real MVP – includes Pauline Chalamet, Amrit Kaur, and others – is undoubtedly talented and delivers genuine, tight-knit, impressive, and most importantly, relatable performances. The narratives of each character are very developed and different from each other; they all represent the full scope of what it means to be a female college student today.

This series is directed by Lila Neugebauer, Kabir Akhtar, and Zoe R. Cassavetes and has remarkable comedic timing, the writing always feels truthful. The direction is able to cherish and chaos of youth.

The music supports youthful atmosphere of the series on tracks that enhance comedic and dramatic parts. Quite a diverse playlist that many can relate to for the transient phase of life, the series of discovery.

The use of cinematography in this series is quite suitable as it portrays the vibrant college life using energetic movement that switches between close frame and wide shots showing space of the college and other smaller areas’ shows how Essex College was well represented in the screen. Dorm rooms retain some realistic feel and core campus landmarks are painted with fresh, inviting colors to enhance the setting of the show further, It should also be noted that special effects are kept to a bare minimum and are used only where necessary. It stays on creating characters and moving the plot forward.

The series maintains the fast and energetic tempo due to editing. Switch between the story arcs is smooth and encapsulates continuity and does not let the viewers get bored from episode to episode.

The show is fast-paced, which is in line with the spirit of college life. Each of these carries on at a pace that reflects the constant and drastic shifts going through the characters.

The conversations are sharp and believable and ensure to engage viewers with the characters’ narrative. At its core it is easily relatable and very funny, especially in its portrayal of youth.

Despite the humor and realism of The Sex Lives of College Girls being on point at times it is stereotypical college show. There are some storylines that could be further developed in order to convey more layers of its characters.

The show The Sex Lives of College Girls is a pleasant watch. It recalls the college life while giving the audience an entertaining, and heartfelt view of female friendships and one’s efforts to find herself. It is funny yet heartfelt, and I think most audiences can appreciate one or the other or both.
