In Fool Me Once, Maya Stern dares face the unknown and a death of her husband does not depict that it was untimely. After his murder, Maya begins to see him in the nanny cam videos and becomes frantic and determined to get to the truth. Meanwhile, Detective Sergeant, Sami Kierce is assigned to the case of the murder while struggling with personal issues. Maya’s niece and nephew investigate their mother’s premature death in this short six-parts TV mini-series with tangled narratives of tragedy and betrayal. The psychological thriller feeling is continuously engaged and is slowly strengthened making you question reality hand in hand with the leading character, while always keeping a tight grip on the feeling of safety.

Michelle Keegan also gives a stunning performance as Maya Stern, portraying indestructible strength mixed with emotional sensitivity and determination in search of the truth. Despite the show’s been an old school, thus not surprising, Richard Armitage’s acting is worthy of appreciation as he skillfully tries to dance between being kind and mysterious at the same time. The acting and talented cast, including Adeel Akhtar, also sends a whole lot of positive energy in the acting and at the end, camerawork is cinematic enough to make the important plot feel emotionally charged. The directors are successful at the complex writing while paying heed to the dramatic presentation where the affects are well looked at in plumbing the plot’s appeal and intricacy.

The use of music in ‘Fool Me Once’ is merely as an underlay, providing a mood enhancing impact without dominating the scenes. It subtly supports the narrative’s mood, not overstressing key actions and emotions while providing focused crises and releases throughout the show.

Filmation in ‘Fool Me Once’ is magnificent, which has addressed excellent use of show’s shadows and blur in the frame and creates an enigmatic feel of the show. The shading of most scenes is also wonderful; the subdued color schemes reflect the series’ darkness perfectly, and the viewer gets completely lost in Maya’s twisted world.

The overall production design of the series also contributes to the show’s dramatic themes: it is quite minimalistic, grim, but elegant. They are authentic to depict the story and the protagonist’s interiority and search for truth.

Though ‘Fool Me Once’ doesn’t exaggerate in splendor and fantasticel elements, it uses them effectively on the levels of visual images to sustain the thriller’s perspective. The effects are kept to a bare minimum so as not to overshadow the plot though character based suspense is used throughout.

This is upheld in ‘Fool Me Once, ’ making it such an edge of the seat kind of experience without necessarily being overtly violent. Transition between the two parallel stories is smooth, which ensures non-intermittent engagement with accompanying suspense.

Skilfully timed, the mini-series ups the pace, or lets suspense brew, thereby establishing a rhythm that enriches suspense. It helps continue subplots nimbly, so that the audiences are entertained but never bored or lagging behind.

The dialog is alive; the emotions resonate and the story lines’ twists and turns make sense. Dialogues are realistic yet filled with hidden motives and twists and provide support to character building as well as sustains the overall element of suspense.

Although ‘Fool Me Once’ is an engaging and serious web television series, it does overuse dramatic elements to a point. A few twists and turns may not appear very surprising for regular watchers of thriller films. However, all those clichés are brought back to life organically in characters and their emotional arc of the series.

At the same time, the series is an enthralling ride back into the twisted world of deception and emotional drama ‘Fool me Once’. It provides not only the successful thriller but also powerfully engages the audience on a very sensitive issue of fragility and strength of human spirit. The show is definitely something that watching devotedly, it engages the audience from the beginning till the end.
