Paatal Lok - TV Series Review

The events depict Inspector Hathi Ram Chaudhary digging into a murder that, at its core, seems like an assassination of a prime-time journalist. But in the course of his investigations he stumbles upon layers of corruption politics and personal animosities which take him deeper into the darker terrain of ‘Paatal Lok,’ the underworld. It becomes a case study where the audience is shown the unpalatable truth that breaks the stereotypical myths and gives a peep into the hidden realities of the organized world. The series has a raw feel to it, and gives its audiences a bleak look at the latest Indian society. Sanskritic elements are incorporated to enhance the movie and accurately represent the societal classes of the time, the art represents the nine circles of hell from Indian mythology. The tone of the show is markedly grim but undeniably captivating, it puts the viewers into a discussion about the concept of morality and life.

Jaideep Ahlawat shine as Hathi Ram Chaudhary, a dedicated cop on his last legs. Deservedly, embodying the anguish of the character is merely understated yet hugely impactful. The principal male lead Amol Parashar is charming and versatile and the other artists such as Ishwak Singh and Gul Panag do a great job by presenting their characters full of depth. Every character appears to be fully developed, and each has their own stories, and their own reasons for doing what they do, which adds so much to the depth of this series.The series is directed by Avinash Arun and Prosit Roy and one has to appreciate the way the series has been built up and the manner in which it has been paced. Their direction does this to enhance the features of each scene and bring the audience to the dimly lit world of deception. In going from cities to villages and even the wilderness, the settings and camera angles add believability to the series and a clear portrayal of the socio-economic status of the protagonists and antagonists while at the same time, give a viewers the creeps.

The production design of Paatal Lok is superb whereby every scene captured duly represents the real word and adds some depth to the show. This is achieved through some scenarios being shot full of realism through professional set designs as well as the props used during the shooting of the scenes.There is limited usage of special effects ,however,the few special effects used,help to bring focus on very vital scenes. The effects are organic, so one can be sure they will support the film’s story instead of outshining it.

One more important advantage is the editing: It also remains fast and interesting from the beginning to the end. The shifts between the different story arcs are smooth and well-timed, keeping the suspense high and the tension consistently building.

Paatal Lok is a show that can sometimes prove to be overly complicated owing to the layers of the plot, therefore, requires the viewer’s attention to keep a tab on the essential details and subtexts. Possible objections could include the clearly revealed message of violence and some scenes may be even shocking to watch. However, the series’ fidelity to realism explains its intention.

They are controversial and disturbing in their nature, but Paatal Lok is a haunting, contemplative watch. It has elements of suspense and strong acting performance, and raises important issues. The series raises questions about society and is therefore a valuable and noteworthy contribution to contemporary Indian television programs.
