Landman: A Tale of Modern Fortunes and Power
From here, Landman transports audiences to the center of West Texas – to oil rigs that stand for prosperity and troubles in the same breath. The drama shows the relations between wildcat billionaires and roughneeks when they are trying to survive in the growing economy and in the process studying the changes in geopolitical circumstances.
This is a masterful handling of themes and issues to do with success, domination, and dehumanization in the name of effecting economic prosperity. The rough and unsparing temper of the book gives the reader a taste of hard truth as Landman does not hesitate to reveal the aspect of environment and moral consequences which the emergence of oil industry poses in a progressively developing town.
Billy Bob Thornton, the lead man, portrays a crisis executive exactly for the purpose of moving his company higher in rank in the middle of oil madness. Surrounded by an excellent cast, such as Jon Hamm and Ali Larter, the actors give a deep and intriguing emotions to characters who is shown to face and struggle with own ethic and moral values.
Such realistic and dramatic feel is due to the efforts made by directors Stepehn Kay, Michael Friedman and writer Taylor Sheridan to portray the character of Landman. In particular, their rather consistent narrative structure maintains the viewers’ interest from the beginning till the end.
The accompaniment of Landman adds up to the semiotics of the series, filling up the rhythmic beat of the oil kingdom while enhancing the texture of the emotional turmoil of the plot.
Just like the locations, the cinematography is stunning with dramatic West Texas panoramas showing the boomtowns and oil rigs well. Visually the movie is elegant and dirty at the same time – it stresses the contrast of opulence and emptiness.
Its production design captures the look and feel of the booming Texas towns of the era, providing a time and place that skillfully blends past and present and wealth with wildcat oil dreams.
‘Bear’ has a nice selection of special effects that help not only to give more credibility to the shown oil rig operations and the Texas scope but also to enrich the story primarily with the basic human emotions of its main characters.
Writing is done with care especially when it comes to editing whereby series do not experience hitches thus giving it a smooth flow. It is possible to jump from high-stakes boardroom meetings to the unsavory oil fields with ease and interest.
Landman keeps a steady rate through matching anticipation and unpredictability across the corporate scheme and the ordinary life of a roughneck, even if it keeps one glued to the screen.
‘Conversations in Landman arent merely eloquent and engaging; they represent the strategic strategy and knowledge needed in business world along with the primal savage outback of oil business thereby being instrumental in the development of character and advancement of the story.’
‘Thus for some the political focus works somewhat against the more personal storytelling of Landman, with good performances still not enough to compensate for what others have wanted.’
Landman is a very entertaining series that at the same time offers food for thought on the ethical issues that are associated with the pursuit of riches. The movie it is a drama packed with suspense, boosted by its cast and therefore every drama lover should watch it.
