
A Timeless Tale of Love and Society: Pride & Prejudice (2005)
‘Pride & Prejudice’, released in 2005 is a romantic drama film directed by Joe Wright and is based on Jane Austen’s novel of the same title. When proud Mr. Darcy meets Elizabeth Bennet, there are some feelings between them, but with time, heart and intellectual relationships with emotions based on class and prejudice are revealed.
The story depicts different aspects of life, love, and prejudice of everyday life, the impossibility of breaking free from the social position assigned at birth. Maintaining a tone that is both humorous and critical, it explores the effects of pride and prejudice even as it stays hopeful and breathlessly romantic.
Elizabeth Bennet is portrayed by Keira Knightley who performs the modern spirited female protagonist wonderfully well. Matthew Macfadyen manages to introduce psychological depth into the film’s main male stereotype imbued with quite a lot of timid secrets. The entire cast such as Rosamund Pike and Jena Malone also do an excellent job of enhancing the credibility of the movie.
Joe Wright effectively brings the audiences to 1790s England while effectively conveying the message of the novel. Being able to retain the brilliant visuals while managing the complex interpersonal relationships of Austen’s characters makes for a compelling narrative in Wright’s interpretation.
Marianelli’s score also successfully paints the film’s mood and provides a fitting accompaniment to the romanticdrama narrative.
The cinematography by Roman Osin brings out the beauty of the English countryside, the opulence of the period architecture, and brings the audience right into the setting of the Every scene is a testimony to the commitment to depicting 1790s England.
There is no glamour, Hollywood-style special effects in the movie and yet the movie makes a terrific attempt at recreating Jane Austen’s world.
The transitions are smooth and manage to keep up the momentum while handling a rather intertwining plot.
