Arcadian - Movie Review

Set in a near future apocalypse in Arcadian, we follow Paul (Nicolas Cage), with his twin teenage sons, Thomas (Jaeden Martell) and Younger (Maxwell Jenkins) as they try and survive in a fortified house. Every sunset reveals beasts too frightening to remain even an hour, nightmarish creatures that live at dusk. Much to his detriment, Paul risks everything to save Thomas gone before nightfall and is forced to face off against the terrifying night creatures in a life or death confrontation. This desperate struggle to survive and the impact that the end of the world has on the family dynamics they contain, are at the core of the film’s central plot which the film, dramatically fuses together with cosmic sweep and action, drama, horror, thriller and sci-fi. Survival is the main theme and powerful explorations of familial loyalty and sacrifice. A dread-inducing atmosphere that makes viewers on edge brings the post apocalyptic world to life and the underlying message to people’s resilience when faced with the insurmountable odds conveys through its exhibiting via a human spirit which Nicolas Cage does with characteristic intensity as Paul. His conversations with Jaeden Martell and Maxwell Jenkins who play his sons Thomas and Joseph are absolutely at the beating heart of the characters and give the film a touch of degree of complexity. Cage has good chemistry with his onscreen sons that helps ground the fantastical bits of the film in genuine emotion and familial affection. It features strong supporting cast work, including Sadie Soverall as a mysterious ally, that subtly enriches the film emotionally, as do the strong character driven narratives that the director of it, Benjamin Brewer finds the right balance between thrill and.

The fact that Arcadian is as engaging as it is thought provoking is in no doubt attributed to his ability to keep tension at high levels and maintain a tight grip on the pacing of the film. Brewers direction showcases the best of his cast, each moment having some degree of consequence and urgency that breathes a gripping air together.

Arcadian musical score amplifies the films tense atmosphere. The pulsating rhythms it provides for scenes with tension, combining with scenes of tension, and the subtle haunting melodies in the underscoring of emotional undertones of the narrative. The music enriches the films view without drowning out key moments, and, though quite fantastic, Arcadians cinematography magnificently renders the stark beauty and danger of the movies post apocalyptic setting. Such juxtaposition of wide shots of desolate landscapes with claustrophobic interiors raises the toll of the storytelling. It is significant that lighting is used wonderfully and the dichotomy between day and night is highlighted given the crucial argument between the characters of the film.

The production design is ideal and creates an immersive and believable world. All of this time, details around the farmhouse have reflected a sanctuary and prison as well as the characters’ lives and struggles. The attention to detail in the creature’s design garners the building of tension and thus horror, each creature encounter being memorable for fear.

The special effects used in the film used effectively to make the creatures that we see come to life. The effects are all swallowed up gracefully into the narrative, without the pitfalls that come with any reliance on too prevalent effects that run the gamut for movies of this kind. They are terrifying and fascinating, heavily contributing to the film’s sense of dread and urgency that compounds throughout.

The editing of Arcadian is kept methodical enough that the pace of the story remains steady until its end. Arcadian has that easy flow between scenes where the intensity cranks up and paces itself out with moments that allow us to reflect. This allows the viewer to feel the characters emotional journey, but also feel tense as they wait for the next threat to come.

Arcadian has a sharp dialogue, the dialogue is just how you would expect dialogue to be for these kinds of circumstances the characters are living in. However, subtext should be everywhere on each exchange, which often contain deep insight into the characters‘ relationship and struggle of the character. While Arcadians core narrative is droolworthy and delivers some amazing performances, it occasionally goes a bit too hard on genre convention to be a new purchase for a seasoned viewer. While they are somewhat predictable, the predictability of certain plot points are handled so carefully and intensely that they rarely pulled me out of the overall experience.

Arcadian left me in a state of profound reflection about how emotionally weighty the experience was, with the weight having lingered long after the credits rolls. Finally I felt, I could identify with the themes in the film that explores themes such as the survival, sacrifice and family bond. While Arcadian’s premise is as familiar as Hollywood sets out to be apocalyptic, the depth of its character portrayals as well as the raw authenticity of their struggles served to remember Arcadian as deeply moving cinematic endeavour. Combined with a blend of horror, thrills and heartfelt drama, this emotional punch is both harrowing and meaningful.
