Virdee - TV Series Review

Having the cultural setting of Bradford as its backdrop, ‘Virdee’ is a complicated investigation of a murder mystery, which the DCI Harry Virdee is to solve while targeting the Asian population. At the same time, Harry deals with the conflicts in his own life, which gives depth to the crime-drama that is based on cultural realities of British presence in India. The intensity of the series is complemented with scenes which promote cultural aspects of Bradford as a cultural city or ‘City of Culture’ and ‘City of Film’. Its dramatic storyline and the acting emphasise the conflict of interest between the private and official responsibilities.

The actor Staz Nair does not only play the main character DCI Harry Virdee but adds layers of private problems to the character. Most of the main cast with players like Elizabeth Berrington and Aysha Kala are great in portraying these diversely focused characters encouraged by Bradford’s diverse background. Hence, they are able to assist in presenting the series’ gripping story.

The impressive cast and direction of talented directors that include Milad Alami, Mo Ali, and Mark Tonderai were able to give a breathtaking view of Bradford. The directors do this effectively in order to represent elements of Bradford within the series and using the geographical locations to create an ominous feel. Their polyfunctional actions contribute to the build up of dramatic component and the realistic depiction of the spiritual life of women in Punjab.

Using the multifaceted analysis, Virdee adds a complex layer of track into the overall picture contributing to the audience’s perception of the story as an exciting drama about suffering and tragic destiny of women in Punjab. While the storyline of Virdee is quite engaging with good acting the show might suffer from pacing at times, especially when there is transition that the storyline might elongate. There are several plot lines throughout the story that, while interesting, could have been further developed to add more depth to the main plot.

Taking all of these aspects into consideration, Virdee is an enthralling watch that presents the crime genre with cultural aspects. It provides a realistic depiction of Bradford and the predicament that comes with the duties associated with a family and a career.
