The Righteous Gemstones - TV Series Review

A Dive into the Glamorously Chaotic World of The Righteous Gemstones

  • 8

The Righteous Gemstones is about the lives of a televangelist family that is seemingly rich and famous. Their interweaving stories take place in the jungle of mega-churches which were themselves either so indulgent, or so shady, that they cannot believe what they see. It takes this never before experienced plot and provides unexpected humor and scandal wrapped in the over-sized world of evangelicalism.

It uses satire and drama beautifully to take on themes of greed, wealth, and family dysfunction in a world of charismatic evangelicalism. It has a refreshing tone that portrays a world of deviant behavior covered by work as charity. Hilarious and thought provoking, the juxtaposition helps viewers debate the differences between actuality and perception in a growing family of incredible power.

The cast serves it up with remarkable performances from John Goodman, Danny McBride and Adam Devine. Depth added to each actors characters without failing to portray the flawed, endearing members of the Gemstone family. The performance of Edi Patterson, particularly, adds so many fine layers to the familial dynamics with her particular comic style.

The series is a perfect encapsulation of the grandiose enjoyment of life as a televangelist under the direction of Jody Hill, David Gordon Green, and Danny McBride. But with their unified vision, each episode is a hybrid of cinematic flair and comedic precision, both funny and textured while remaining funny.

And the soundtrack fits the series quirky tone, blending gospel and modern songs. Not only does it help the scenes play out, but it adds to the overlay of the chaotic plot, creating an engaging audio background reflecting the plots chaos.|The cinematography provides a view of the opulence of their world. Strategically wide shots and vibrant colors are used to highlight the grandiosity of their life while also capturing the details of their more mundane moments to prove the show’s thematic ambivalence.

The costuming and set designs come together in intricate ways that reflect the the thematic opposites of religious piety and very excess.

The set designs and costuming also work in unison, incorporating the contradictory themes of the lives of the two clans. Its amazing how the lush mega-church and equally opulent Gemstone family home act as perfect backdrops to the unfolding drama, and how much production design has to offer in creating such rich sets.

Special effects arent called in quite a lot, but where they are used, they clear a lot of the way in moments of absurd comedy and dramatic tension. The editing is tight and sharp and is used purposefully to keep the series moving at a nice clip without taking away from the story.

These effects purposefully contribute to the believability of this larger than life narrative without drowning the story. The series also has seamless cuts and transitions between scenes which helps with comedic timing and both the comedic and dramatic parts working effectively.

The series also moves fast, each episode building pace. The fast pacing works to the series narrative well, moving along in dashes of drama, comedy, and suspense, in quick but effective episodes.

The dialogue is a big draw of the series, which shines in snappy banter and physical humor, as well as depth and emotion. The comedy of the characters lives, as well as the shows deep engagement with serious topics, are masterfully balanced as comedy and commentary. The show also contains an edge of satire that might not strike every person the way it did me on certain topics of its subject matter.

The Righteous Gemstones takes viewers on a wonderfully wild and funny ride into the world of wealth, greed and family dynamics. It is a world both foreign and familiar to viewers: a laugh generator and a source of insight, in equal measures. This series, in general, is a testament to the ever so creative work put into these cast and crew.
