As the name suggest, ‘Mayfair Witches’ is a story of a young neurosurgeon, Alexandra Daddario, who inherits her lineage as a Mayfair witch. In this Stephen King like world, not only must she adjust to her burgeoning magical abilities but also deal with a horrifying entity that haunts women in her family. To understand all these elements, one needs to watch the series being significantly based on the author’s definitely outstanding novels; The show also perfectly reflects the mysterious atmosphere and the centuries-long family conflict at the basis of the plot. It cannot go without mention that there is a strong sense of gothic, which refers not only to history, but also to the somewhat mystical, spooky atmosphere of New Orleans. ‘Mayfair Witches’ is ultimately a show that looks at one of the most inalienable aspects of human nature – emotions with the help of supernatural thrill and leaves the viewer wondering where one begins and the other ends.

Alexandra Daddario strikes a great pose how a strong character grows and transforms throughout. The rest she has an excellent support cast in Tongayi Chirisa, Jack Huston, and Harry Hamlin just to mention but a few. Together, they create diverse characters with their own reasons and histories for the story and serve as a tapestry of the episodes’ thickness.

Each episode is accompanied by a specific vision of their director, Logan Kibens, Haifaa Al-Mansour, and Axelle Carolyn. Their direction makes the prose of Anne Rice come alive – as we swing melodiously between contemplative writing and passion; the viewer gets the complete experience of the chilling and thrilling.

The music score in the series is equally enthralling cumulating eerie tunes and subtle intra-instrumental climax that match the suspense and drama of each scene. The openly expressed fantasy and horror elements are complemented by the magnificent music responsible for the gothic mood of the series and shaping the emotional and thematic accents of the plot.

In terms of visuals, Mayfair Witches is a stunning drama to the eye. The work of the cinematographer brings out the beauty of the New Orleans, using bright tones mixed with occasional darkness in shot-making that emulates the show’s themes. Every frame is unique, it has a touch of the supernatural and nothing feels out of place.

The art direction needs a bouquet, for the art work that captures the essence of New Orleans and the era-appropriate costumes will leave you mesmerized. The mechanical engulfs viewers into a reality where the historical and the modern interrelate.

Special effects are used sparingly to support supernatural sequences but not distort the storyline. These effects build instead of pull focus; every element integrates to make magic seem possible and real, which lets the viewers fully immerse.

‘Mayfair Witches’ has focused and complex editing that is effective in the progressive telling of the story and the revelation of characterization. Every case is developed patiently and captures the audience’s interest with a prospect of going through the enigmatic story.

The show has a slow tempo, focusing on the Mayfair family’s secrets. The pacing of this unfolding might be slow for certain audience, but the series needs it to build and keep suspense while offering character natural and convincingly developed space to evolve.

The dialogues in the series are written well, and this is the dialogue full of psychological depth and realistic speaking patterns between the characters. What the show does exceptionally well is address specific issues of its protagonists and dialogues reflecting the themes of the series maxima ‘Identity’ and ‘Family Duty’ enrich the show’s narrative.

For all its strongpoints in terms of atmosphere and characterization Mayfair Witches sometimes draws out certain events on the narrative to what might become tedious with the viewer. Perhaps this is a significant concern, but given the details of the characters and the wonderful world constructed around them, it does not become a major disadvantage when considering the entire ‘Mayfair Witches’ series. It creates suspense and curiosity and makes one to sit down and reflect on it, it is recommendable for any fan of Anne Rice and supernatural drama. Every episode captured my interest indubitably waiting for yet another side of the Mayfair family’s spooky past.
