The Hunt - Movie Review

The Thrilling and Satirical Journey of 'The Hunt'

  • 28

This is an adrenalin pumping ride from beginning to end as twelve random strangers get stuck with their hands off, have no idea where they are and why they are being hunted. The movie takes place in the web of internet conspiracies, where each human is turned into prey for the rich elite, and in the end, the movie becomes a play of cat and mouse. Set on a rollercoaster of suspense, the narrative follows Crystal, a mysterious hero who turns the norm of hunter into hunter. The film lacks any clear moral compass, instead, encouraging you to keep guessing along the way through well blended in tones of action, thriller and horror while interlacing a healthy dose of satirical dialogue.

It delves into issues of class warfare, prejudice and the desire of survival, all of which are interwoven in a story with dark humour and satire which paints a horrible picture for societal divides. It’s intense and gripping, and not afraid to take a shot at the extremes on both sides. Cleverly satirizing superficial biases, The Hunt delivers high octane thrills. The satirical edges to the film are written with sharply one liners that balance comedy and horror until they create an exhilarating spectacle that is entertaining and thought provoking.

Betty Gilpin is a stand out as Crystal who exudes strength and cunning with every action. Gilpins performance, as Crystal, is the foundation of the film, lending substance to much of the shots’ craziness. Hilary Swank is also good as Athena and while not enough wit or mystery to lure audiences in, shes still a delight to follow. Each is performed solidly by the supporting cast, whose flavor of the narrative adds to the chaotic energy of the film.

Craig Zobel keeps us on the edge of our seats throughout its relentless pace, turning The Hunt into a masterful film. The satirical elements are well handled by Zobel allowing action and tension to be laid amongst moments which provoke thought. This turns a relatively simple survival film into a demystifying critique of modern day politics and social commentary with a sting that provokes thinking, but forces audiences to question their preconceptions.|The action packed moments of the film are complemented with a score that is driven by a rhythmic beat but designed to keep you on the edge of your seat. The narrative ebbs and flows into the music, punching moments of suspense and adding an intense beat to the hunt. Combined with suspenseful instrumental tracks and startling musical cues, The Hunt is a film not knowing what itll do next.

The Hunt brings in stunning cinematography for the outdoor joy and pain it depicts. Sharp contrasts and dynamic shots reinforce this, as does the visual storytelling of the film’s thematic elements with the screwed characters all cut off in their own worlds. Using angles and perspectives in such a creative way the audience enter in the chaotic world of the plot and provide a layer of visual depth of the suspenseful narrative.

The hunt has an appropriately designed production that speaks about its themes. The films settings about the divide between the hunters and the hunted are as important to the viewer as the desolate landscapes and the contrasting interiors of luxury and squalor. Creating these environments is very meticulous and adds to the narrative of the film and is similar to the films satirical commentary on the societys hierarchy.

The films special effects are enough visceral impact that is needed for its action scenes. The Hunt effortlessly weaves physical stunts with CGI for a violence that hits with every blow. The Hunt is a tense, real portrayal of events that twists the survival game even further, with viewers trapped into the harrowing game of survival as they become more and more claustrophobic about everything happening.

What gives The Hunt in terms of editing a sharp focus, drawing out the hasty pace of the film. All the scenes are cut very fast, so the suspense is high and people are hooked in from the beginning to the end. The Hunt is as relentless in its craft as the hunt itself: editors compress a cinematic experience packed with action and intrigue, leaving no moment out of place. The editing works, particularly during quieter more reflective sequences that balance out the movies intense action driven forward by the films rhythmic urgency. The Hunt is sharp with good dialog, always insightful, crackling with energy. Satire and social commentary are artfully balanced with exchanges between characters to explore wider themes. The Hunt serves both as a platform for humor and lampooning the state of politics, while propelling the story forward with sharp and breezy dialogue.

Apart from the thrill ride of the action, some might find the films taking of of social ills a little tinged with too little. Some scenes lean closer to caricature than comedy, and there is a bit of a balance between satire and straightforward storytelling. Some characters don’t receive the same level of development either, making them somewhat like pawns in the main narrative. While there are some minor setbacks, the film manages to craft an entertaining and thought provoking experience despite these minor shortcomings. What it is, is a film that entertains you and is a thinking film about how conflict is fought and how society is biased. Even though the movie is fast paced, it is an illuminating one, and a tonally compelling one that will resonate with viewers, thanks to essentially audacious storytelling within a frame of perfectly constructed tension. Suspense or critique, The Hunt will hook your audience for a ride you won’t soon forget.
