Mama: A Hauntingly Beautiful Thriller
It is based on the story of two sisters, Victoria and Lily who disappeared in the forest after their father, a man who had killed their mother, infuriated them. Five years later, I found them and Walter places them under the care of their uncle Lucas and his partner, Annabel. Yet there is an unknown entity of a woman, referred to as Mama, which appears to be present in the apartment causing suspense and myth in the family. It has a creepy atmosphere while maintaining the intensity of its subject, the recovery of the relationship between the mother and her son after succeeding years of trauma.
Jessica Chastain and Nikolaj Coster Waldau lead a strong cast now. Thean and dark indeed are Chastain, as the reluctant stand-in mother Annabel, and Coster-Waldau, who takes on a double part. Both Megan Charpentier and Isabelle Nélisse as the tortured sisters provide touchingly believable performances and look incredibly like real twin sisters; Mama is stylish and thrilling as well as being well-paced. The director Muschietti is also good at controlling horror emotions and the time of the movie, and the picture remains enigmatic to the very end.
The music in the movie also contributes to the creation of an atmosphere of suspense and deep feeling. Music used in the movie corresponds to the thrilling moments and to the dramatic action on the screen.
The work of a cinematographer is remarkable as he captures quite haunting and beautiful scenes that add to the otherworldly feel of the film. Another example is the flashlight and the camera shots, used to allow the audience to sense the fear gradually increasing throughout the film.
The production of Mama is also very thoughtful; the house and the forest which are the main cinematographic settings contribute to the overall eerie atmosphere of the movie.
Special effects are not overemphasized in the movie, they are very helpful to develop the plot and are not intrusive. In the supernatural experience of the film, the appearance of Mama is done effectively through a combination of stylistic elements, which are within the everyday practical effects.
The editing technique used in the Mama movie is effective in creating a smooth flow of the story and still making the viewers be engaged and apprehensive at the same time. Overall Look and Feel: Fast cuts and transition basically occur at the best time when the audiences’ sitting edge is most active. This way the audience stays engaged in the suspense and passion of the plot.THe characters and their emotions are expressed with a lot of reliance on the dialogues. What is more important is that discussions between characters are not only relevant but rather profound, does not contain unnecessary ClientServer manipulations.
Of course, Mama is incredibly efficient in setting up mood and expressing emotions, but some viewers could be disappointed by a lack of an original approach; the movie refers to too many clichés of a horror genre. The plot is sometimes overstated through the supernatural aspect and will be too much for those seeking a fresh type of horror film.
Mama tells the audience an exciting story, involving their emotions through the themes of family and love within supernatural horror. It is a subtler kind of horror in the film, the effective acting backed up by the filmmaker’s ability to evoke psychological depth and the power of the performances beneath a layer of realism and darkness. While it borrows from some of the tropes associated with the chosen genre, its delivery is rewarding and chilling at the same time.
