Klaus is based on Jesper, a lazy postman, who is posted in a small Arctic island. He embarks on new journey and unusual friendships with a lonely toymaker – Klaus that changes the holiday atmosphere of the whole town. Being kind, Jesper and Klaus change the whole town.

This story is about redemption, kindness, and people’s transformation. The setting perfectly captures the Christmas spirit, and the film offers a genuinely innocent and funny take on the Christmas spirit.

It is a breath of fresh air to have a film with good humour and sentiments with a touch of animality. Their chemistry is calm, Schwartzman projecting the comedy into the character while Simmons adds more layers to Klaus. Rashida Jones brings the extra layer of light as Jesper’s sidekick, Alva.

Criterion Collection | Klaus – Directors’ Statement Pablos delivers visually arresting and emotionally engaging holiday themed movie with well-timed narrative and character development.

Instrumental Music by Alfonso G. Aguilar augments the mood of the film; using lovely, thrilling, and exciting tunes that at times come close to overpowering the storyline but never cross that line.

From visual point of view, Klaus’s animation is splendid; both natural landscape and creative animation designs. It creates a new level of quality to the animated aesthetic, giving depth and embrace to every image.

The art of this picture is brilliant; it depicts so beautiful, severe winter outside and warm and comfy inside at the same time. Realism is combined with rather exuberant and slightly fairy-tale like elements extremely skillfully.

Special effects are used ingeniously to complement and emphasize the magical aspects of the film while maintaining the solidity of the story. The phenomenon backs up the story further contributing to the endearing and magical appeal of the film.

Stylistically, Klaus’ editing is very fluent and keeps the pace going in the right tempo and balance between funny moments and dramatic elements. This has a telling effect on the break-neck pace the film is telling at – it’s informative, not overwhelming. Timing of plot twists is well chosen, creating an anticipation for some moving film scenes.

Klaus’ dialogues are well-scripted and are filled with the essence of humor and warmth characteristic for the plot. Every line adds depth to the characters’ development, and this is why the interactions between Jesper and Klaus are poignant and endearing.

Thus, despite the beauty of animation, the movie might seem slightly cliché to followers of holiday productions since it employs the motifs typical for this genre. However, the consistently refreshing and warm-hearted animation and its delivery more than make up for any generic storytelling.

All in all, Klaus is a perfect example of what a holiday movie should be. This one sums up the Christmas values so well through great animation, heart-warming story and lovable protagonists. Es un programa imprescindible de ver esté en las fiestas decembristas.
