Bridget Jones's Baby - Movie Review

A Charming Return: Bridget Jones's Baby

  • 6

Bridget Jones’s Baby covers the colorful life story of Bridget Jones and the troubles she came across when being pregnant, and the paternity of her baby. The movie focuses on the joys and challenges of finding love, becoming a mother and a woman in the context of Yellow’s London. It moves at a hilariously profound comedy of the same serioussness towards its themes centered on relationships, identities, and discovering who they are. At the heart of all the laughter, there is a certain portrayal of the struggles that come with the concept of contemporary familiy life and the beauty that comes with accepting flaws.

Renée Zellweger in reprising her role as Bridget could not have been any more perfect; she embodies the character in a way that is as warm as it is real. Her chemistry with the dashing Colin Firth and charismatic Patrick Dempsey is as enchanting as the plot in the amusing love triangle they portray in the movie. Her decisions as a director are plot-based and stress character relations, so the plot would be both entertaining and touching.

Accompanying music fits the perky and cheerful mood of the film and is filled with upbeat and emotionally charged tracks. I have also noted that the given songs chosen range from popular music and famous musical pieces which makes it even more enjoyable for the characters and the viewers with an added thrill added to Bridget’s journey.

I have observed that the cinematography of the movie highlighted various scenes as a city of London but at the same time emphasized on individual intimate interactions among the characters. The choice to use bright and energetic colors suits the movie very well and makes watching it stimulating to the eyes. Each location is developed in order to represent certain characters’ personalities to make the movie real and as truthful as possible.

Even though most of non-naturalistic effects are not necessary for the shooting, the film succeeds in adding some comic moments with its stereotypical slips and playfully enhancing Bridget’s experiences. These are used professionally hence putting into enhancement the cut and charm of the movie.

The flow of the movie is well structured; with good timed humor and dramatic scenes with perfect interconnection. The movements from one scene to another are well done and this drives on the audience throughout with comedy and emotions seen in Bridget’s escapades. Interchange of funny jokes and serious moments with oneself is well-timed, and does not make the audience feel that time is being wasted. Thus, the script demonstrates highly realistic interactions of people who are friends, in love, or in family.

Of course, ‘Bridget Jones’s Baby’ walks like a delightful comedy and a charming romance movie overall, sometimes being too predictable for a RomCom. However, all these are well compensated by the love and humor aspect of the film making the entire journey a beautiful one. This is a film that has an appeal for GFs and haters, making people happy and giving them the feeling of the joyful quotidian in life nobody before saw for itself in an adventure.
